PAC OrientationWith the inauguration of the 5th Parliament of the 4th Republic of Ghana and the composition of new standing and select committees, the Financial Scrutiny Project of Parliamentary Centre funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID) and the Good Financial Governance program of the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) after consulting with the leadership of the new Public Accounts Committee (PAC) embarked on an orientation workshop for members of the PAC and the leadership of the Committee on Employment, Social Welfare and State Enterprises.

The workshop which took place at Mac Dic Royal Plaza Hotel, Koforidua, from 22-26 April, 2009, was to introduce members who are of varied backgrounds to the procedures of the PAC  and to some of the basic tools they need to function adequately and to make them useful in the work of the Committee.   

The orientation workshop also served as the platform for members who have had previous experience with the Committee to share their accumulated knowledge with new members on the Committee and thereby help the Committee to take collective stock of previous knowledge and how it can be harnessed to improve the performance of the PAC.  In addition, the orientation workshop introduced members of the Committee to the basic concepts in Accounting, Auditing and the Public Financial Administration Regulations. A fourth area covered by the workshop was the collaboration between the Committee, the Media and the other independent governance institutions. 

A total of 53 attended the Workshop made up of 26 MPs including the Majority Leader, and Members of the PAC and leadership of the  Committee on Employment, Social Welfare and State Enterprises, 8 Parliamentary Staff, and 19 others from Audit Service, including the Deputy Auditor General in charge of Public Accounts,   Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning, Controller and Accountant General’s Department, the Serious Fraud Office (SFO), Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII), GTZ and the Parliamentary Centre.
