What is the Committee of Selection? PDF Print E-mail

The Committee of Selection is mandated by the standing orders of the Parliament of the Republic of Ghana to consider the composition of Standing and Select committees of Parliament. In practice the Committee of Selection uses a ratio approved by the House to help them compose committee.

The ratio for the Fourth Parliament is Majority : Minority (59.1 : 40.9)

Parliamentary Committees are formed after the first meeting of the Parliament of the Republic of Ghana, following the Election of the Speaker of Parliament and the Two Deputy Speakers of Parliament.

The Committee of Selection determines the composition and the membership of the various committees based on a ratio approved by Parliament. In the case of Ad Hoc or special Committees the Speaker or Leadership can nominate members.

When needed the Committee of Selection can consider and re-compose committees at the first meeting of every session.

Historically Parliamentary Committees are said to have become a common feature of the Parliament of Ghana during the Second, Third and Fourth Parliaments. The first Parliament had Sessional Select Committees and Ad Hoc Committees.
